🌸 The Rose Festival 2026: A Guide to Morocco’s Fragrant Celebration

As the spring air warms the Vallee des Roses, a scent so intoxicating begins to drift across the Dades Valley that it can be smelled miles before you reach the town of Kelaat M’Gouna. Every May, this region prepares for the Moussem des Roses (The Rose Festival), a sensory explosion that marks the harvest of the legendary Damask rose.

For 2026, the festival is scheduled to run from May 6 to May 9, transforming this quiet mountain town into a sea of pink petals, traditional music, and Berber hospitality.

The festival is more than just a party; it is the economic and cultural heartbeat of the region. It honors the Rosa Damascena, a flower believed to have been brought to Morocco by a pilgrim from Damascus centuries ago.

🏺 What Happens During the Moussem?

The four-day celebration is a deep dive into the soul of the High Atlas.

  • The Dawn Harvest: Before the festival begins, local women rise at 4:00 AM to hand-pick the buds before the sun’s heat evaporates the precious essential oils.
  • The Crowning of the Rose Queen: A young woman from the valley is chosen as the “Miss Rose” of the year. She is selected not just for her beauty, but for her understanding of the rose’s significance to the local community.
  • The Grand Parade: The Rose Queen leads a spectacular procession of floats through the town, as thousands of spectators are showered with rose water and petals.
  • Ahwash Performances: You will see the Ahwash, a rhythmic circle dance of the Amazigh people, performed by local troupes to the sound of frame drums and poetic chanting.

🌿 The “Liquid Gold” of Kelaat M’Gouna

While the festival is a celebration, the industry behind it is serious business. It takes roughly 3,000 kilograms of rose petals to produce just one liter of pure rose essential oil, making it one of the most expensive liquids in the world.

During the festival, the local cooperatives open their doors. You can witness the traditional distillation process in massive copper stills and purchase authentic rose water, soaps, and culinary rose buds.
