High in the rugged solitude of the High Atlas, cradled by the jagged silhouettes of the Toubkal Massif, lies a natural masterpiece that defies the arid reputation of the Moroccan mountains. This is Lake Ifni (Lac d’Ifni), the highest mountain lake in Morocco and a place of profound, crystalline silence.
While most trekkers focus on the summit of Mount Toubkal, those who venture across the Tizi n’Ouanoums pass discover a sapphire-blue sanctuary that feels like a piece of the Alps dropped into the heart of North Africa.
Perched at an altitude of 2,295 meters, Lake Ifni is a geological marvel. Unlike many mountain lakes, it has no visible outlet; its waters are gathered from the snowmelt of the surrounding 4,000-meter peaks, filtered through the limestone and volcanic rock of the massif.
🏺 A Landscape of Raw Grandeur
The journey to Lake Ifni is an alpine odyssey. Whether you arrive from the village of Imlil or the southern route via Amsouzart, the first sight of the lake is unforgettable.
- The Vertical Amphitheater: The lake is surrounded by steep, scree-covered slopes and towering rock walls. The contrast between the deep, turquoise water and the sun-scorched, ochre-red mountains creates a visual drama that is a photographer’s dream.
- Geological Mystery: The lake was formed thousands of years ago by a massive landslide that blocked the valley, creating a natural dam. This gives the water a mysterious depth—estimated at over 30 meters—and a temperature that remains bracingly cold even in the height of summer.

Reaching Lake Ifni is a feat of endurance. It is most commonly visited as part of a multi-day “Toubkal Circuit.”
- The Tizi n’Ouanoums Pass (3,600m): Descending from this high pass toward the lake offers one of the most spectacular views in the Atlas. You watch the lake grow from a tiny blue dot to a vast, shimmering expanse.
- Wild Camping: There are no luxury hotels here. The experience of Lake Ifni is defined by camping on its stony shores. Sleeping under a sky thick with the Milky Way, with the sound of water gently lapping against the rocks, is the ultimate “off-grid” experience.
🐐 The Spirit of the South: Amsouzart
On the southern side of the lake lies the village of Amsouzart, one of the most beautiful in the region.
- Walnut Groves and Terraces: Unlike the starkness of the high passes, the descent to Amsouzart leads to lush terraces of walnut trees and barley.
- Berber Hospitality: The Gite owners in this area are known for their incredible mountain bread and honey. After the grueling trek over the pass, a night in a traditional Berber home here feels like a return to civilization.
