🏰 N’kob guide: Morocco’s Incredible Village of 45 Kasbahs

We have reached the southern edge of the Jbel Saghro mountains, and there is no better place to finish our Anti-Atlas journey than N’kob.

If you’ve ever wanted to see what Morocco looked like centuries ago, this is your destination. While other villages might have one or two prominent kasbahs, N’kob is a breathtaking architectural anomaly—a single oasis village home to 45 massive, earthen kasbahs, all remarkably preserved.

N’kob is the historic stronghold of the Ait Atta tribe. Strategically positioned on the road between the Drañ Valley and the Tafilalt, it was a major hub for the trans-Saharan caravans. Today, it stands as a monument to Berber power, with its towering mud-brick structures silhouetted against the jagged backdrop of the Saghro peaks.

đŸ§± The Architecture of Survival

The “45 Kasbahs” aren’t just for show. These were fortified family homes built to withstand both the Saharan heat and tribal raids.

  • PisĂ© Construction: Every kasbah is built from “rammed earth”—a mixture of clay, straw, and water. This organic material is a natural insulator, keeping the rooms cool during the 40°C summer days.
  • Crenulated Towers: Look closely at the rooftops; the jagged “teeth” or crenulations were designed for defense, allowing protectors to see out while staying hidden.
  • Intricate Motifs: Many of the upper walls are decorated with geometric Berber patterns that indicate the wealth and lineage of the families who built them.

📍 What to Explore in N’kob

  • Kasbah Hopping: Many of the historic kasbahs have been converted into beautiful boutique hotels (like Kasbah Baha Baha or Kasbah Ait Omar). You can visit their terraces for a 360-degree view of the “skyline” of mud towers.
  • The Ethnographic Museum: Located inside Kasbah Baha Baha, this small museum houses a fascinating collection of Ait Atta war weapons, traditional wedding costumes, and nomadic tools.
  • The Palm Grove (Palmeraie): Below the village lies a lush oasis. A 1-hour walk through the gardens will show you the ancient seguia (irrigation) system that keeps the date palms and almond trees thriving in the desert air.
  • The Weekly Souk: If you are there on a Sunday, don’t miss the market. It is the second-largest in the Zagora province and the best place to buy authentic Ait Atta leather sandals, known for their incredible durability.

🚗 Getting There & Staying

  • Location: N’kob is about 135km (2.5 hours) from Ouarzazate and 40km from Agdz.
  • Where to Stay: Stay in a kasbah! Sleeping inside 2-meter thick mud walls is an experience you won’t forget. Most offer rooftop dinners where you can watch the sunset turn the earthen village into glowing gold.
