He presented a mural design featuring a dragon to a fisherman from Azemmour. The fisherman’s wife was inspired by the design and embroidered it. This gave birth to a unique style of embroidery. The 2nd is that embroidery was introduced by the religious denominations. They were there in Azemmour and El Jadida. They opened sewing and embroidery schools. This helped young girls who did not have the chance to be educated. It later evolved to include other styles and figures like peacocks, rabbits, branches, trees, and dragons. The period of introducing this art is not well determined. Nonetheless, it generally relates to the XVII century or before. This conclusion is based on works exhibited in museums.
The Oum Rabii cooperative
The Azemmour embroidery is found and practiced in every house in Azemmour. But cooperatives are created to develop and preserve this tradition. One cooperative is the “Oum Rabii,” which focuses on the development of women and children. It works to train young girls. It also focuses on women in Azemmour embroidery. The goal is to preserve this cultural heritage and contribute to the economic empowerment of women. Latifa Mountassir, one of the leaders of this cooperative practices this type of embroidery since 1986 with her family. She collaborates with other women to develop this art in Dar Sanii. The authorities created this space for local artisans. Here, they can work collectively and be encouraged to produce and innovate this beautiful craft.
